Strengthening Gender Inclusion in Cooperatives!

Recently, as part of the We Effect East Africa funded Accountability for Gender Equality Project (AGEP) project; we conducted a vital partner assessment for our partner Remusi Housing Cooperative Society ltd, to evaluate the extent to which the Cooperative has embraced gender inclusivity and mainstreaming in its systems and operations.

Findings from this assessment will guide in enhancing gender equality efforts, ensuring that every member of the Cooperative Union has a voice and has equal opportunities in line with the Leaving No One Behind (LNOB) principle, which is an integral transformative aspect of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) whose aim is to eradicate poverty, end discrimination and exclusion and reduce inequalities.

The institutional assessment was part of a series involving four We Effect partner Cooperative Unions Remusi included, following the development of Institutional Gender Policies for the partner to help promote the uptake of gender accommodative practices within their systems and operations, and a series of capacity building workshops and sensitization forums for the leadership and membership of each of the partner Cooperative Unions.

The capacity building training and sensitization forums mainly focused on gender and other related issues, as informed by the institutional assessment that was conducted at the onset of the project.
